NBT Final This weekend

Introducing The Parker Experience

The Parker Experience formed in December of 2005, consisting of Lloyd Parker (Bass/vocals), Ryan Parker (Guitar/vocals) and Cameron Branch (Drums).

Lloyd and Ryan, as brothers had been playing together for years; just jamming and in bands.

Cameron Branch started to learn drums especially for The Parker Experence and now the three are better than ever, writing their first record, "The Sunflower Monster", named after the first song they ever played together...

All States Of Emergency Tour

Just before they boarded a plane to the USA The Living End were crowned Kings of the Jack Live Music Awards, when they were granted four awards out of their six nominations. The Jack Awards, the band received (voted for by the public) included; Andy Strachan for Best Drummer, Chris Cheney for Best Male performer and they took out Best Live Band and Best Live TV Performance. Needless to say the punter popularity for these lads continues with a very healthy uptake with tickets sales roaring along for their Australian All States of Emergency tour since it went on sale last week.

‘Nothing Lasts Forever’ the band’s current and fourth single from the new State Of Emergency album was the number three most added to radio last week. Be sure to check out this week’s music TV shows to catch a viewing of the new and very cool 1950’s styled clip which was shot on location in Sydney before the band shot off to the USA.

A reminder that the forthcoming Australian All States Of Emergency tour for The Living End will take place in most states during school holidays and kicks off in WA on August 31st, moving on into South Australia, New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria, the Northern Territory, Queensland and the ACT throughout September and October.

Introducing Nix

Formed in late 2004, this three-piece spent the first seven months of their alliance solely focused on building and fine tuning their repertoire. Stemming from their contrasting musical backgrounds spewed an energy driven, heavy alternative rock with emotive vocal melodies and an intricate rhythm section.

In May '05 Nix recorded "Use Your Mind" and "Paranoia" as part of their initial demo at Blackbird studios. Gigging frequently since then, Nix have played with a broad spectrum of local artists and bands at many of Perths leading original music venues.

2006: Nix are currently recording their debut single Runaway. Working with mastermind Roland Lim @ Aussie Assault Studios, the 4-track single looks to have a launch and release scheduled mid-year. Check out the samples on their MySpace page and stay tuned.

The Sleepy Jackson Interview

The Sleepy Jackson are on the brink of worldwide fame. The little band from Perth that split in half a few years ago to create End of Fashion are releasing their second full length album: Personality (One Was A Spider, One Was A Bird) on July 1st. Drummer Malcom Clarke gave Perth Music this exclusive interview.

PM: First of all, congratulations on the album Mal, it is quite exceptional. Can you tell us how was the experience of making the album?

Mal: Well it was a different experience than recording our first album Lovers. This time round we didn't have Justin and Rod to contribute which did limit us but made the whole process much more interesting and challenging. Luke had new songs in acoustic guitar and some lyrics to start songs off and we did the demos in about 3 weeks in the studio. The recording process these days makes it necessary to have almost complete songs demoed to show to the record company so everything can be planned for the album recording period. In the old days bands like Pink Floyd would just go into the studio and create the entire album as they record and the record companies were happy with that.

PM: Tell us about the title: Personality (One Was A Spider, One Was A Bird).

Mal: Well the Personality bit has to do with all the people that were involved in making this record and the different aspects that they brought along. The Spider/Bird bit has to do with some religious symbolism. It shows the two different sides - God/Devil, Good/Evil and leaves it up to each person to make up their own mind. Some people might see the Spider as evil and the Bird as good, other people might see the complete opposite.

PM: While The Sleepy Jackson consist of only yourself and Luke Steele at the moment, the band is a 5 piece while touring. Will the band ever have five people in it or will it just stay that way for touring?

Mal: We would definitely consider other people for the band. The way it has been in the past is that we have had very creative people in the band so I guess they can feel limited and restricted in staying in a band with other highly creative people. Everybody likes to have control over what they create so when there are a few people creating together, eventually someone will feel like they don’t have as much control as they’d like.

PM: I guess that can be one reason for creating a side project such as End Of Fashion or your new side project From the Skies.

Mal: Well when I started End Of Fashion with Justin and Rod it was just to have some fun and to play some different music to the Sleepies. We never intended on it becoming as big as it is now and I never considered leaving The Sleepy Jackson for it. I’m very glad that the guys are doing as well as they are and it’s the same type of thing with From The Skies. I use From The Skies as an outlet for myself to write music and it will only ever be a side project. Maybe one day From The Skies could release something but it is very different from The Sleepy Jackson and right now I’m happy just putting demos and stuff on MySpace.

PM: Speaking of MySpace, I see that The Sleepy Jackson have the entire new album on there for people to listen to for a limited time. The listening party is an awesome idea. Do you think MySpace is a great thing for the music industry?

Mal: Yeah it’s a great way for fans to interact directly with artists and we know if we have anything to say to the fans we can just post it to our friend list. It’s easy to use, which is good for me coz I can’t get into the whole website design stuff, I can just log onto MySpace and post stuff.

PM: I believe that one song on the new album ('Don't Say') was co-written by The Veronicas. How did that come about?

Mal: Well we met with their manager in the US, this was before they had broken out and they were about 17. They seemed like cool chicks and Luke and the girls decided to write a song together. Originally they were going to use the song on their album but then decided against it. Luke really liked the song so re-recorded the vocals and changed it a bit and now it’s on the album. A lot of people give us hassle about the fact that they co-wrote a song but it’s just like co-writing a song with a friend. They were involved so are credited for that.

Luke really likes collaborating with other artists and has done a bit of it in the last 12 months with people like Daniel Johns and Paul Mac. Things are getting set up for when we are in New York in a couple months for Luke to do a collaboration with Yoko Ono which will be very cool.

PM: That would be very, very cool. There are a few songs on the Personality with strings and orchestral sounds. Are you considering doing any live shows with a live orchestra?

Mal: Yeah we would love to do that. We thought about while recording and are hoping to do it at some stage, it’s just a budget issue which might stop it happening. But it would be great to do something like what Ben Folds did with the WA Symphony Orchestra.

Introducing Double Entendre

Emerging from Fremantle, WA, Double Entendre are young, energetic and a bit different, playing a dynamic mix of acoustic melodies that blend folk rock with jazz, roots, flamenco and a good danceable beat. With four versatile musicians and a worldly muse, this multitalented band keep it interesting with bursting barbershop-style harmonies and a lot of instruments including ukulele, melodica, mandolin, sax and didge.

The band made it to the National Campus Bands competition State Final in 2004 and was later invited to tour with Mark Hoffman's didge 'n drum group, EmDee. In 2005, they sparked interest from London & New York based manager Mike Dixon, who is closely involved with artists such as Ryan Adams, Butterfly Boucher and The Spinto Band. The band have recently made it into WA’s Next Big Thing competition and are planning to release a debut EP and organise a tour before the end of the year.

The band are taking a dive back into the local music scene with their first major showcase at Kulcha in Fremantle on the 14th of July. Since returning from travels, the band has been working on creating more of a jazz & world influenced sound by introducing a double bass and three-part vocal harmonies. At Kulcha they will bring you a night of dynamic acoustic melodies blending jazz, folk, roots, flamenco and strong, healthy rhythm that is sure to set the dance floor on fire. As a multitalented four-piece, Double Entendre get mind and body moving with ukulele, melodica, mandolin, sax, didge and various other instruments. Supporting Double Entendre is the beautifully haunting and soulfully raw sound of NSW’s, Loren Kate.

Introducing Nelson Clemente

Nelson Clemente is an emerging Perth artist who wrote his first song in 1996 after being given a guitar as a gift. At the tender age of 15, he found solace and release in an art that was quick to reveal a hidden talent: a natural ability to write heartfelt and haunting music.

In 2002 Nelson grasped the opportunity to collaborate with producer / composer James Tauber, forming pop duo Nelson James. This tuneful teaming helped form a fantastic foundation; not to mention an array of great 80s style pop music.

2006 saw Nelson venturing out on his own, compiling his efforts and emerging as a highly self motivated solo artist. Working with Rob Agostini (Blance DuBois, Jessi London) and Steve Scanlon (Danni Minogue, Tina Arena, Tommy Emmanuel) to produce his debut EP. His "velvet voice" has been unleashed into a fury of dark electro pop tracks that has already sparked the attention of musical collaborators and admirers worldwide.

Red Shell (aka Red Shell Storm) are an entertaining three-piece band, consisting of female vocals, keys, bass and drums.

Since 1996 The Next Big Thing (WA), sponsored by Drug Aware and Healthway, has been a crucial showcase for musicians from all over the state. Each year over 100 acts from more than 200 entries get the chance to strut their stuff in a series of heats held across WA, from broome to Esperance, for the chance to be The Next Big Thing.

With entries for the 2006 Next Big Thing closing today lets take a look back a year ago at the 2005 finalists. Finishing first were The Fault with divergent musical tastes and an eclectic style of rock with just a touch of new wave. After winning the NBT, The Fault went on to play the 2006 Perth Big Day Out and scored a nomination for the "Most promising New Act" WAMI 2006 Award.

Finishing second were The Wednesday Society who play explosive rock that you just have to dance to, went on to support a host of touring acts and were nominated for the "Favourite Newcomer" WAMI 2006 award.

The Dee Dee Dums came third and were a wild card in the NBT final after winning Ampfest, are described as playing blistering blues/rock and funky jazz varied by mid-set instrument/style swapping. They went on to touring regional WA spreading their unique style of music around the state.

The Sky Bleeds finished fourth and are five-piece emo/screamo bunch of lads and knocked over the judges with their energy and took the Microphone Solutions Australia prize.

Little Birdy Recording In LA

Little Birdy have spent the past few months locked away in Fleet Studios in WA, to work on new material and demo music for their second album and follow up to their debut ‘bigbiglove’. Armed with their astounding demos Little Birdy head to Los Angeles this week to commence working producer John King. John King, who as part of the legendary production team The Dust Brothers has produced some amazing music and albums including ‘Odelay’ by Beck, ‘Paul’s Boutique’ by The Beastie Boys and the Fight Club Soundtrack.

Little Birdy were very excited about this opportunity to work with John King who had produced some of their favourite albums. Birdys were also excited about spending time in Los Angeles and getting to know the city (and golf courses) a little better. Assisting John King is Cliff Norrell who has worked with amazing artists such as Jeff Buckley and REM.

Can’t give too much away at this stage, but the demos produced in the Fleet Studios sessions are really progressive and an exciting direction for Little Birdy. We should expect to see the results hopefully by August with a single to radio around then and a tour to follow. Little Birdy will be updating the Studio Diary at every chance they get, so please keep an eye on the Studio Diary Section of the website (www.littlebirdy.net/LBSTUDIO/).
Please note Birdys are definitely focused so if there is a delay in diary entries, it is probably because Birdys are laying down some amazing music!

Birds of Tokyo are a band out of Perth who despite their relatively short life time have already established themselves as one of Perth’s premier rock bands, regularly playing their own headlining shows at packed venues such as Amplifier and Rosemount Hotel and supporting bands such as Switchfoot, Jebediah and After the Fall.

2005 saw Birds of Tokyo release 2 EPs, the first “Self Titled” in January was put out as a teaser/demo and the songs received airplay on Triple J, 96fm, RTRFM, Base FM, FBI and PBS. The second, “One Way/Stay” a double A side single recorded in Melbourne with acclaimed producer Forrester Savell (Helmet, Full Scale, Karnivool), was launched at the Amplifier Bar in early October to a packed out crowd of almost 500 people with the single “Stay” nominated for the WAMi Rock Song of the Year Award and selected to appear on the WAMi 2006 Festival Showcase CD.

Acclaimed vocalist Ian Kenny (Karnivool) ’s side project, Birds of Tokyo's music marries soaring vocal melodies with catchy rock based guitar hooks and a driving rhythm section, the live show is filled with an energy as raw, exposing and emotionally charged as it is energetic and full of foot-tapping rockin’ goodness.

Something for Kate have announced the title of their long awaited 5th studio album titled; 'Desert Lights' and have added two extra shows to their national ‘Sci-Fi Sunsets’ tour in Melbourne on Tuesday May 16 & a second show in Brisbane’s Zoo on Sunday May 21.

Desert Lights follows 2003's #1 seller The Official Fiction and is due for release on July 1.

Meanwhile the new single "Cigarettes and Suitcases" - the first single from the new album is released in Australia next Saturday May 6th. The single features 3 bonus tracks including new track 'The Actor Makes His Move' - recorded by Brad Wood in L.A. during the album sessions, a cover of Echo and The Bunnymen's classic 'The Killing Moon' and a live recording of 'Prick',taken from the bands anniversary show at The Prince of Wales, St Kilda in 2004.

The album Desert Lights is a powerful mix of discord and melody, sophistication and beauty, it signals a band reaching a heightened level of creativity. Bianca Jade Interview

Bianca Jade grew up in Perth and her love and passion for music has taken her to such places as New York and London. She has released one EP in September 2005 and plans another EP later this year. Bianca gave us this exclusive interview.

Q. Tell us a little bit of history about yourself as a singer/songwriter/musician. How did you start out and what have you achieved?

I distinctly remember writing my first song when I was 13. It wasn’t particularly good but it marked a major shift from where I stopped just listening to music & started exploring the idea of writing music. I grew up in a particularly creative & arty household full of books, art, instruments & creations in the living room. In high school I played guitar, wrote songs & sang in an all girl band. The group evolved with me into university and became known as Enamel. I then went to study music at WAAPA which is about the time I became a solo artist. In 2005 I released my first solo EP ‘Taste It’ and shortly afterwards went on tour to New York City & London.

Q. What bands have had the greatest influence on you and who are your favourite bands at the moment?

I listen to a mix of styles. Growing up I was exposed to the folk poets, rock & roll, jazz, blues as well as opera & classical music. At the moment I’m enjoying the sounds of Emiliana Torrini, Jen Cloher, Jose Gonzalez & Lior. I don’t really have favorites…there’s too many great voices & great songs for me.

Q. What helps in writing new songs? Do you need solitude to get inspiration?

I spend a lot of time playing guitar so writing songs just kind of happens for me. I come up with a sound, a riff, a vocal line or lyric. Sometimes it happens quickly but other times the ideas for one song become another. I don’t need to be in a particular mood or space I constantly have new ideas or lyrics that just come about. Whether I can build them into a complete song is another thing.

Q. What is your favourite live music venue? Do you prefer small pub shows with a small audience or bigger shows with lots of people cheering you on?

CBGB’s 313 Gallery in New York City is a great venue. The audience is seated on little round tables right up to the edge of the stage so you end up having conversations with people at the front. I really like that. There’s something inviting about an intimate venue where the audience not only get to know you but you get to know them.

Q. What is your song writing process? Do you write the lyrics and music together or one first and then the other?

I generally start with the guitar. A sound, a lyric or a vocal line may follow. It’s not a set out process for me. It’s rather fluid.

Q. What is your take on the Perth Music Scene at the moment? Do you think it is thriving or is it a bit of over-hype?

Being so isolated Perth will always generate its own music & art. I believe there will always be a strong music scene. Whether it is labeled as ‘thriving’ just depends on how the rest of the country decides to view us.

Q. What plans do you have for the next few months?

In mid May I leave to spend 2 months in New York City, USA to continue where I left off with the NYC music scene. When I return in July I start work on my next record which will be released in October this year.

Korn Interview

Having released 6 studio albums and selling over 25 million albums worldwide, the band many consider the founders of Nu-Metal, Korn came upon a few stumbling blocks. Their 11 year/6 album contract with Sony Records had finished and guitarist Brian "Head" Welch decided that he had "...chosen the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior, and would be dedicating his musical pursuits to that end". To overcome all of this the band decided to do something unheard of in the music industry - They signed a $25 million contract with EMI Music in exchange for a share in profits of their next two albums, including tours and merchandising. In the middle of their world tour to promote their new album "See You On The Other Side", guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer gave Perth Music this exclusive interview.

I asked Munky if, after 11 years, recording albums was getting easier or harder. "Well, it is definitely still a challenge to create something new and exciting. The creating bit is difficult, the recording bit is easier. We love trying something new and that is why we signed the partnership with EMI. It has given us freedom to do what we want and know that our record company has complete faith in us. In the past record companies would give bands money to create an album and if they didn't make money from that then that would be it. We hope that with deals like the one we have with EMI it can create a model that other artists can look at and consider. It is a partnership where both parties can profit."

With music that is so intense and full of sound it was a big shock to the band that guitarist "Head" decided to leave and a challenge to the recording process. "Well when Head left and I became the only guitarist for the band, it put a lot of responsibility on me as a musician. I had to come up with a way of creating Korn music with one guitar instead of two. It was very daunting at first and when we started recording I was only thinking of creating songs with one guitar due to playing them live. After I realised that when we tour and need to play our older songs we would have to have a touring guitarist, it made it much easier. I allowed myself to create different guitar tracks for songs and they sounded great."

"When creating new songs for the album we tried a different strategy than usual. I started with a drum loop in the studio and just played until I found a fitting riff. We then used that riff to create the songs verse and chorus which then produced the melody of the song. 'Fieldy' then layed down the basslines, Dave (Silveria) went over the drum loop with proper drums and Jonathan (Davis) put lyrics in last. Usually we create the songs with a more live process. This new way was harder for me but let everyone in the band be a lot more creative."

Korn's current world tour includes North America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and then North America again. Along with all this Korn have decided that the rock festival they created - The Family Values Tour - will be coming back this year. "We'll be doing that tour again along with The Deftones, Stone Sour, Flyleaf and Dir En Grey. This time we're gonna have a second stage which will have different stuff on it - maybe some Hip Hop or something." I asked Munky whether The Family Values Tour will ever make it down to Australia: "I'd love to see it come here but there is so much overhead in a tour like this that I can't see it happening in the near future."

On a personal note I asked Munky what he has coming up in the near future. "When we get to Europe in a few weeks I hope to start recording some stuff for a solo album. It has been brewing up for a while now and I usually bring a small recording rig on tour so I'll probably do some recording then. It'll most probably be an instrumental album, a little experimental and I still don't really know how it will come out. It could be just 3 fifteen minute songs or a whole bunch of different sounding songs."

For another cool little Perth blog check out The Perth Files. It has some awesome articles about everything in and around Perth. The following is a little article about Perth Music "back in the day".

Despite this town being known as 'Cover Band City' ever since Todd Johnston and V-Capri graced the stage at the smoked glass, chrome, plastic palm trees and cream brick Floreat Park Hotel, we do have an incredible underbelly of fine original musicians.

I remember my 'hey day' back in the 80s - shut up, there was too some good music! - seeing bands the likes of The Stems, 20th Century Crucifixion, Kansas City Killers, The Holly Rollers, Die Monster Die, Cinema Prague and Love Pump at such venues as The Shents, The Grosvenor and The Old Melbourne.

Of course, these venues are long gone and no longer will I feel the hair on my head slowly singe during a fire breathing moment with The Painters and Dockers, or revel in the platform shoed glory of Love Pump in full flight. But, hey - this town needs more retirement homes!

I also remember a place called Fat City Cafe off The Broadway in Nedlands which went right off on a Sunday... however, the last time old Hadie and myself rocked up there, a Nedlands-type with a lemon jumper tied around his neck and deck shoes said there'd never been bands at the venue and told us to politely push off... does anyone else remember this place???

My most memorable gig? - a night at the Shents sharing the contents of a hollowed out bible sent from the midst of a Queensland jungle while Kim Salmon set about making his guitar talk to me in three different languages... what's yours?

The Tall Poppies Interview

The Veronicas aren't the only set of identical twin Australian singers. Perth based duo The Tall Poppies have a unique sound and fresh outlook on music, travel and what it takes to make it in the industry.

Q. Tell us a little bit of history about yourselves as singers/songwriters. How did you start out and what have you achieved?

Cath and I have always written song together since we were nine or ten. We’d use an old organ with a fake drum beat given to us by our grandmother. When we were seventeen we invested in our first acoustic guitar. The bloke at the guitar shop had the nerve to recommend the cheapest, “You’ll want a surfboard next week”. The guitar collection grew and so did our song collection.

We were writing songs separately most of the time and then we realized we could play as a duo. Once we had a set of solid material we got on a plane and played around London, never having played live in our home town. We learnt a lot in that year and had a blast.

I returned home to finish my degree and Cath came back after recording a song with a producer in London. Since then we’ve recorded our own album in Perth and have made a video that has been broadcast nationally and internationally.

Q. What bands have had the greatest influence on you and who are your favourite bands at the moment?

I suppose the bands that have the greatest influence are the one’s we listened to as impressionable adolescents; Pulp, Lush, The Divine Comedy to name a few.

At the moment I’m listening to Paolo Conte, an Italian jazz singer. “He’s wonderful, he’s wonderful.”

Q. What helps in writing new songs? Do you need solitude to get inspiration?

Our best songs have been written incidentally during conversation. ‘Funky’ was written after I got my hair cut and Catherine felt she had to complement it while she happened to have the guitar in hand. “Goodnight Catherine” was written when Catherine was going to bed and I happened to have the guitar in hand.

Other times we might just jam out a new chord progression and then make up the lyrics together over a cup of tea. Solitude plays a part. We even have a song called ‘Solitude’. It was written in solitude.

Q. I believe both of you have travelled around quite a bit. Has this travel helped in your music, both lyrically and musically?

Oh for sure. Travelling is a very inspiring thing to do. One’s senses and emotions are heightened and I think that spills over into our song writing. A lot of the songs on our album were written during or immediately after a holiday. For example, the tune and theme for ‘Drinking Life through a Straw’ was developed with the exilerating experience of a ski holiday in mind.

Q. Do you think that The Veronicas beat you to the female identical twin spot in Australian music? Do you like The Veronicas music or would you rather kick their asses?

Yes, they beat us with that old marketing trick so Cath and I have decided to become just good friends or maybe spread the rumour that we are a lesbian couple, but I think Ta Tu beat us to “that spot” in international music. I wouldn’t buy The Veronicas’ CD but then again I don’t buy many.

Q. What is your favourite live music venue to play? Do you prefer small pub shows with a small audience or bigger shows with lots of people cheering you on?

I liked playing the Kashmir club in London. The best gigs are when you can hear yourself playing well with a nice mix and the audience listens. Any people cheering, whether on a small or large scale is good. It’s like when you tell a joke and somebody laughs. Anybody will do. Although, having said that, having the whole audience cheer encore in unison is the best.

Q. What is your song writing process? Do you write the lyrics and music together or one first and then the other? Do you have a psychic ability to write songs simultaneously?

Our song writing process varies. They usually start with a guitar chord progression and vocal melody. Sometimes the piano or bass line come first. There are quite a few songs with my verses and Catherine’s choruses stuck together. The lyrics are always written second to the melody. We write the lyrics together so that they’re not too introverted and abstract. This is usually done in a pleasant setting like a café or in the garden. We like to have songs about things we both want to sing about.

As for psychic abilities, we did write the same song at the same time whilst in different countries. I’d written the bass line and Catherine had the same chord progression so we already had the tune. Didn’t take long to add the lyrics and voila, we had ‘Chamelleon’ sorted.

Q. What is your take on the Perth Music Scene at the moment? Do you think it is thriving or is it a bit of over-hype?

There are a lot of good musicians in Perth but there aren’t so many people listening. At the moment there are a lot of Perth bands doing well in Australia and that’s brilliant.

Q. What plans do you have for the next few months?

Cath and I are just getting ready to go back to the UK in May. Alex is staying behind to study. Hopefully Alex will join us later but in the meantime Cath and I are going to release 'Time Machine' as a single and do a few shows there. Before we leave we’re filming a video for 'Drinking Life'. Really looking forward to it.

Wolfmother Announce Homecoming Tour

Wolfmother will finally return home in July for their first Australian shows since they tore up the Big Day Out back in January. Tickets for all concerts go on sale at 9am today.

The Sydney trio are currently criss-crossing the globe to help spread the word about their acclaimed, self titled, debut album.

The group is also being embraced by international radio with their song “Woman” being the #1 most added song at the Alternative and Active Rock formats in the US over recent weeks and Radio 1 in the UK playlisting the band.

With her debut EP on the way, Perth girl Leena is set to take the Australian music scene by storm. She gave us this exclusive interview.

Q. Tell us a little bit of history about yourself as a singer/songwriter. How did you start out and what have you achieved?

I started playing music when I was 5 living in Tasmania, working out how to play songs that I heard on tv on my great grandmother's beautiful old upright piano. After 10 years of painful and regimented classical piano and flute training I decided to act on my instinct and start writing my own tunes on piano and then later, on guitar. I was always into writing and found that it was a very easy way to express complicated teenage feelings, that made no sense what-so-ever till I saw them on paper or heard them in my songs.

After I finished high school I decided to blow off uni for a while and go and check out my father's home country, Thailand. For about 4 years there I explored Thailand while making visits to europe and the states where I had a boyfriend. I was making a living from playing shows then and when I came back to perth to study politics at uni I realised that I wanted to put all my energy into writing and performing music. Since that decision I have become a pretty hard worker and live from performing my own songs, something I never expected to happen. I've been lucky enough to play with a bunch of incredible musicians and to play hundreds of fantastic shows, in regional w.a. and in Perth.

Q. What bands have had the greatest influence on you and who are your favourite bands at the moment?

Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age, Elvis Costello and The Beatles have had huge influences on me. My favourites at the moment? Black Rebel Motorclycle Club and Bob Evans.

Q. What helps in writing new songs? Do you need solitude to get inspiration?

Yes I do, in a big way for the most part. Recently I've been writing with Perth band Eskimo Joe, and it's a welcome change to be collaborating, especially with people i trust musically.

Q. Favourite AFL team?

None.

Q. What is your favourite live music venue? Do you prefer small pub shows with a small audience or bigger shows with lots of people cheering you on?

I perform differently depending on the vibe of the venue and the crowd size and participation, but the indescribable feeling is always the same no matter how big or small the audience. I love playing to crowds that you can read enough to make them laugh and feel involved in the show. Writing music for me is all about people identifying with a feeling or a moment described in a song and i think there is a real art in being able to portray that through performance.

I love playing the Paddo because of the high stage and the awesome sound engineer! To watch music, I like any venue that isn't too claustrophobic and over packed.

Q. What is your song writing process? Do you write the lyrics and music together or one first and then the other?

The better songs that I write always just come in one hit, like a steam train. There are others that exist as poems, riffs or half songs for years till you finally give them a bit of love. Songs are definitely weird creatures that have a life of their own.

Q. What is your take on the Perth Music Scene at the moment? Do you think it is thriving or is it a bit of over-hype?

If there is over hype, I would take that as a complement to Perth music. There are bucket loads of original and talented bands here and I think it's fantastic that they are getting the national recognition they deserve. In the end people can work out what they like for themselves, regardless of hype.

Q. What plans do you have for the next few months?

I recently received a grant from artswa to record and release my first studio EP. I'm in preproduction at the moment and will launch the first single by august this year. I also have a lot of residencies, local shows and tours coming up so I have a lot on my plate at the moment.

Pippa Drysdale Interview

Local gem Pippa Drysdale showcased her talents at this years WAMI festival and is on their compilation CD. She plays at different venues in and around Perth and can heard quite often on local radio stations. So far she has over 2000 fans (Australia and overseas) and that figure is surely rising. Next month she's going on tour with Melbourne band Kanvas Grey but before that venture she gave us this interview.

Q. Tell us a little bit of history about yourself as a singer/songwriter. How did you start out and what have you achieved?

Well, I started playing guitar while I was living in New York, six years ago. I taught myself off the internet (with no speakers, which made things kind of hard...lol). It took me about 6 months to realise that I was reading TAB (guitar music) upside down, that discovery definitely made things sound a whole lot better : ) I really only picked up the guitar to write songs.

What have I acheived? Ummm...I've written, recorded and released two albums, "Print of My Hand" and "Helium", I've played live on the radio quite a bit, "Print of My Hand" got a couple of really nice reviews, one of which was from the States and resulted in quite a few sales and some life long fans and "Helium" was RTR's feature album of the week some time in March. But more than anything I've learnt so much as a musician and songwriter and gotten to play with some pretty cool people : )

Q. What bands have had the greatest influence on you and who are your favourite bands at the moment?

Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, Suzanne Vega, Joni Mitchell, Dar Williams, Ani Difranco, Jewel, Sarah Mclachlan...the list goes on. At the moment I'm really into Cindy Lauper - a very good songwriter..

Q. What helps in writing new songs? Do you need solitude to get inspiration?

I need HEAPS of solitude. Not so much for getting inspiration, that comes from everyday life, but for the actually writing process. Anyone who knows me well will tell you how cranky I get when I don't get enough time alone to write. I can't even have someone else in the house. Don't know why, that's just the way it is : )

Q. Favourite AFL team?

The one that's losing.

Q. What is your favourite live music venue? Do you prefer small pub shows with a small audience or bigger shows with lots of people cheering you on?

Definitely small venues where I can really interact with the audience. My favourite? Not sure, probably the Swan Acoustic Lounge.

Q. What is your song writing process? Do you write the lyrics and music together or one first and then the other?

Generally I write it all together in one fell swoop. Most of my songs just pour out of me in the space of about an hour, but then, there are others that I walk around trying to write for ages before they come out right.

Q. What is your take on the Perth Music Scene at the moment? Do you think it is thriving or is it a bit of over-hype?

I think Perth artists are getting more attention interstate than in the past, but I haven't noticed live music taking over every bar/pub/restaurant. So I'm not really sure about that one.

Q. What plans do you have for the next few months?

I'm going over east to play a few shows with Kanvas Grey (a Melbourne band) in May which should be really cool. After that I'm not really sure, I'm thinking of touring overseas later this year or maybe early next year, so we'll see.

A Decade Today Interview

A Decade Today are a melodic/post hardcore rock band from Perth who have been playing music together for several years. A Decade Today has an original sound consisting of melodic passages coloured with vocal and guitar harmony, heavily contrasted with brutal, disjointed sections of carefully structured chaos, delivered with raw, honest intensity. Soon to be recording their first EP, Perthmusic caught up with guitarists Wayne and Damian for a chat.

Q. So where did the name for the band come from?

Damo: It came from my tattoo, which I got for my Grandpa who died. Later I was explaining to the boys that it was a decade that day since he had died, hence the band name A Decade Today.

Q. What bands have had the greatest influence on you and who are your favorite bands at the moment?

Damo: I think the bands that have influenced us all as a group is Beloved, Thrice, Thursday, well myself and our singer/bass player Steve anyhow.
Wayne: Yeah, the bands that have influenced our sound the most would be those three, but as for favorite bands, they probably wouldn't sound much like what the band sounds like and the list would be really long.

Q. Ok, your ultimate gig to play? Who would you play with, where would it be, and who would you be playing to?

Wayne: I'd like to play to a crowd of midgets, just to make myself feel really big.
Damo: I’d like to play at that castle the Chilli Peppers played at…
Wayne: Slane Castle…
Damo: Yeah… with Beloved, Thrice, Metallica and the Dixie Chicks
Wayne: Yeah… the Dixie Chicks…

Q. What plans do you have for the band in the upcoming months?

Wayne: We're going to be recording an EP soon and we're playing a few festival shows down south as well as organizing a small tour to Geraldton with a few bands that we play with and organize shows with a lot. Then we are playing a show on a boat on the Swan River, ‘Revert On The River’. Should be an interesting couple of months…

Q. If you could have written any song, what song do you wish you had written?

Damo: I wish I had written Stairway to Heaven because everybody knows that song, it’s one of the most famous songs ever.
Wayne: I wish I’d written Classical Gas, because its just so cool.

Q. What are some of your favorite venues in Perth to play?

Wayne: The Swan basement is good, and Mojos.
Damo: I really like playing at castlerock, the kids down there fucking rule man..
Wayne: Yeah anywhere down in Rockingham, the kids go nuts….
Q. What is you favorite A Decade Today Song?

Damo: A new song called ‘Abigale’ otherwise, ‘Strange Turn Of Events’.
Wayne: Yeah, ‘Strange Turn Of Events’, or ‘For We Are Not Here’. They are good songs to play live because they have energy and the crowd gets into it more.

Q. How often do you write songs? What percentage of those do you end up keeping? What’s the song writing process like?

Damo: I write songs whenever I pick the guitar up, it’s a matter of liking what comes out enough to keep it.
Wayne: We jam on a lot of new stuff all of the time and filter out what doesn’t fit into the song we’re trying to write and maybe save it for another song.

Placebos 5th studio album offers a brand new collection of tortured dark themed tunes, continuing to do what they do best. It has been ten years since Placebo released their self titled debut album, but Meds carries on with the sound they have made their own, although now being more refined and sleek.

Two high points on the album are the duets done with Alison Mossheart (from The Kills) and legendary Michael Stipe (of REM fame). Mossheart features in the album opener and title track Meds, her ghost like vocals blend effortlessly with Molkos creating a great contrast. Broken Promises, the bands duet with Stipe begins slowly using his vocals with a haunting effect, again contrasting well with Molkos voice and angry guitar.

Stand out tracks include Infra-Red and Post Blue. They are classic Placebo tracks that would fit seamlessly into the previously released best of album. Meds will pull in new younger fans while still remain faithful and not disappoint Placebos older fan base.

Named appropriately as “Both Sides of the Gun” Ben Harpers 7th album offering is just that, with 2 discs, one disc carrying his slower, gentler acoustic songs, and the other disc letting him let loose and rock out a little. Playing almost every instrument on almost every track Harper shows his musical diversity from the beautiful Morning Yearning to the heavier Serve Your Soul.

Even though it is a two disc album, there is only around an hours worth of music and 18 songs, so there is none of the overindulgent, unfocused baggage that sometimes comes along when an artists releases a two disc album.

Disc one is perfect listening material for a lazy Sunday afternoon, with slow somber songs about yearning and desire. Sweet Nothing Serenade: the albums instrumental track leaves you feeling warm, fuzzy and happy while Morning Yearning and Waiting for You easily pull at your heart stings. Harpers ability to write soulful lyrics are easily demonstrated again on this disc, accompanied by his warm soothing voice, creates beautiful easy to listen to music.

Disc two is where Harpers political statements are made, with songs about the management of the Katrina floods, Iraq and violence in the home. The disc start with the funky Arabian inspired Better Way, which is a fun, upbeat track that is easy to sing along to. Engraved Invitation is a rocking Rolling Stones sounding track which easily sums up the general feel of the second disc.

Each disc could easily stand alone and be released as an album, but contrast each other nicely depending on the mood your in and the type of Harper you feel like listening too.

Claire Clarke Interview

With her debut EP coming out in a few months local talent Claire Clarke told us more about what makes her tick and why you should be listening more to local music.

Q. Tell us a little bit of history about yourself as a singer/songwriter. How did you start out and what have you achieved?

In 2000 I sang an Australian classic in memory of my father and was overwhelmed by the connection I had with people on a sincere emotional level. With a little encouragement from my teacher my music career began.

I focused all my energy into writing lyrics and vocal melodies, learning the theory of music and vocal techniques and disciplines. At the end of 2005 I was accepted as one of the youngest contemporary vocalists at the prestigious WA Academy of Performing Arts. I am very excited to perform my repertoire of original songs at Perth live music venues and am looking forward to releasing my debut EP Alter Ego, the first chapter in my career as a recording artist

Q. What bands have had the greatest influence on you and who are your favourite bands at the moment?

I must admit solo artists such as; Natalie Imbruglia, Missy Higgins, and Avril Lavigne have been my greatest influences. I don’t have a favourite band per se, though I do have great admiration for Perth bands and independent artists. I guess I’m just a little biased. J I listen to a really diverse range of music and I love it all. Currently Alanis Morissette’s collection is getting a good workout in my CD player.

Q. What helps in writing new songs? Do you need solitude to get inspiration?

I’m usually alone when I write and this typically occurs at night time. I guess it’s the solitude which holds no boundaries and provides free reign.

Q. Favourite AFL team?

In risk of getting my ass kicked, I’m a rugby union girl all the way. I don’t dare enter the Eagles/Dockers battle!

Q. What is your favourite live music venue? Do you prefer small pub shows with a small audience or bigger shows with lots of people cheering you on?

The Paddo has really been a stand out for me. The vibe is awesome, I love it. In saying that though I enjoy all the original music venues in Perth, for different reasons. The Hydey is very intimate and I adore that punters can literally be at your feet and in your face. It’s great!

Big shows are unbeatable, I love to feed off a huge audience, especially when the listeners are getting into it as much as you.

Q. What is your song writing process? Do you write the lyrics and music together or one first and then the other?

I write lyrics all the time and usually have a melody in mind. Other times I record melodies that pop in my head and add the lyrics after. I’ve never had a ‘formula’ as I find it limits me creatively.

Q. What is your take on the Perth Music Scene at the moment? Do you think it is thriving or is it a bit of over-hype?

Being born and raised in Perth I love the Perth scene. There is a genuine sense of ‘reality’ about Perth, its people and music. I think the Perth music scene is definitely thriving with bands like End of Fashion, Eskimo Joe, Gyroscope, Little Birdy, The Panics, Schvendes, and then of course there are the solo artists like John Butler, Nathan Gaunt and many more I haven’t mentioned. The proof is in the pudding we have an amazing bunch of talented musicians.

Q. What plans do you have for the next few months?

I have just been contacted by Nova 93.7 for an interview and feature my music on WA Made. This is very exciting! I’m releasing my Debut EP Alter Ego 1st July 2006. My website claireclarke.com is being updated to sample and sell my music. I have been performing my songs acoustically and am really looking forward to performing with my band very soon. I am especially looking forward to reaching a wider audience and raising my profile.

Bob Evans Interview

Bob Evans (AKA Kevin Mitchell from Jebediah) has a new single, soon a new album and a new lease on life. The new single "Don't You Think It's Time?" will be available in stores May 13 and his second solo album "Suburban Songbook" will be available June 12. Perth Music asked him a few questions about his sophomore album and he gave us this interview:

Q. Tell us a little bit about the new album "Suburban Songbook". Did you approach this album differently than "Suburban Kid" and was it a harder album to write?

Suburban Songbook is a timeless romantic suburban fairytale. I recorded it in Nashville, in September/October 2005. I approached it similarly to Suburban Kid in that I spent every free day I had in my backroom demoing however this time round I had better equipment and I also bought a synthesiser to demo string, brass and piano arrangements because I wanted to make an album heavy on varied instrumentation, so in that regard it was very diiferent to the stripped back, rawer Suburban Kid. It was a harder album to write in a way cos my standards had risen a little and also creatively my inspiration was demanding a lot from my brain.

Q. Who are your favourite bands at the moment and has your touring the UK and US shown you any bands you absolutely love but had never heard of before?

I really loved Tegan and Sara when I toured with them just before going to the US. I saw a cool band in Goteborg, Sweden that played the middle slot between me and Architecture in Helsinki but I can’t remember their names! They were very cool...like the Hives but with a female singer and minus the suits. Oh, I discovered Mary Gautier when I was in Nashville. I went to a bar cos Missy Higgins was playing and I’d never seen her before but I got there late and only saw 2 songs. Then the woman Missy was supporting came on and she was amazing. Like a lesbian Johnny Cash. I bought her album. I got in to Ben Kwellers album recently. Josh Rouse’s Nashville album. I’m digging Josh Pykes mini album. I like the Faker album. Oh, I really fell in love with Lucinda Williams “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” too while I was Stateside. A bit of Gram Parsons. I really like the new Sigur Rios record too.

Q. How has it been releasing the new album on a major record label (EMI) compared to the independant Redline Records which released your first album?

Well, it’s still early days yet, the album doesn’t come out til June so we’ll see. But obviously everything is done on a bigger scale. It’s kinda like what it was like being on Murmer with Jebs before Sony swallowed it up.

Q. Can the Eagles go all the way this year?

Definitely. We were the best team last year but it is very difficult for any side to maintain that kind of form for 26 weeks or whatever. We dropped off toward the end. We still haven’t solved our tall forward situation and we need greater results from Hansen, Staker and Lynch. I think we can forget about Gardiner for now. I hear we have one or two good kids that might debut this year but I aint seen ‘em in action yet. Ofcourse our midfield once again will dominate. Remember we had to lose to Hawthorn in 91 so we could win it the following year. The experience we gathered from all those finals and some good performances at the MCG last year will carry through to this year. I also like the Saints and the Western Bulldogs this year.

Q. Will there be any special guests or surprises on the new album you can tell us?

Not really. The best thing on this album on that front is that the drummer is Ken Coomer who used to drum for Wilco. That was a real thrill. And Brad Jones, who produced it, plays bass and is just an awesome player.

Q. Tell us a little bit about the first single form the album "Don't You Think It's Time?". What is it about, is it an indication of the album and what can we expect for the new video for it?

I’m not saying what any of the songs are about for this record. I want to lay the whole album bare for interpretation. It’s definitely one of the most stripped back songs off the record. The second single that comes out just before the album, when combined with the first one, will give a pretty good idea of what the whole album sounds like. The new video plays with the concept of time and is the video makers interpretation of the song.

Q. What is your take on the Perth Music Scene at the moment? Do you think it is thriving or is it a bit of over-hype?

It is a little hyped but who cares? I think Perth really deserves the attention it is getting cos I genuinely believe we have a lot of really good bands here and the hype won’t last much longer so bands should be milking it while it lasts. I also reckon the hype has produced some really positive results creatively, because bands seem way more ambitious musically than they were before. It’s like The Sleepy Jackson caused some kind of seismic shift amongst indi rock bands. It’s a real blessed time for lovers of guitar bands here in Perth I think.

Q. What are you doing over the next few months?

I think I’m going to be on the road a fair bit actually. Touring with The Black Keys, then Josh Pyke then there will be the album tour and other things yet to be confirmed. And when I’m home I’ll be writing a new Jebs record with the other guys.

Steve Parkin Interview

Steve Parkin is a somewhat veteran of the Perth Music scene. He is currently writing his second solo album and gave us this interview.

Q. Tell us a little bit of history about yourself as a singer/songwriter. How did you start out and what have you achieved?

Well I'm a singer and songwriter from Fremantle, Western Australia. I currently plays both solo and with my band The Foreign Films. Used to be WA pop/rock bands Autopilot and Vinyl. I've played the Big Day Out, Rock-It festival, supported the likes of Tori Amos, Sloan, Ken Stringfellow, Powderfinger and Eskimo Joe, and have released several CD's - the last one being debut solo album Sandytown (through Shock Records 2005) which was recorded at Fremantle's Debaser Studios. Sandytown was Produced and features playing by the Debaser crew Rodney Aravena (End of Fashion) Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe) and Andrew Lawson (Avenues).

Q. What bands have had the greatest influence on you and who are your favourite bands at the moment?

Augie March, Sufjan Stevens, Dios Malos, Flaming Lips, Elbow, HEAPS of others!

Q. What helps in writing new songs? Do you need solitude to get inspiration?

The melody has to come first. Then i get a mood, then come the lyrics. Solitude does help - but it's a rare commodity!

Q. Favourite AFL team?

DOCKERS, of course

Q. Who are your favourite live bands?

Eskimo Joe, Red Jezebel, Little Birdy, Karnivool, Macarburrettors, Gyroscope, Belle Ends, Paver Pickins, Kill Devil Hills are awesome.

Q. What is your favourite live music venue? Do you prefer small pub shows with a small audience or bigger shows with lots of people cheering you on?

Any audience that is there for the music is alright with me. I've played Rock It to 16,000 and I've played Mojos to 15 people. Was actually more scared at the Mojos gig. They can see the whites of your eyes!

Q. Is the Perth music community a tight knit bunch?

Dunno about Perth. Fremantle's pretty bloody cool at the moment. Nah, it's great in WA at the moment. Lots of support all around, as far as I can see.

Q. What is your song writing process? Do you write the lyrics and music together or one first and then the other?

Usually music first, then words. Usually.

Q. What is your take on the Perth Music Scene at the moment? Do you think it is thriving or is it a bit of over-hype?

No. It is better than its ever been. The quality of songwriting, production, live shows is amazing. You have some of the best producers and engineers in the country here at the moment. Debaser, Dave Parkin, Shaun O'Callaghan, too many to mention. Also some of the country's best bands. We just can't seem to talk the sandgropers into coming out in the same numbers as their eastern states cousins. Turn off Big Brother. Go to a gig.

Q. What plans do you have for the next few months?

Writing another album, due to record in June/July 06. Also working on the Debaser Community Orchestra album. More to come on that soon!

Snowman Interview

With their debut album just around the corner, Perth's 'up and comers' Snowman gave us an exclusive interview.

Q. Tell us a little bit of history about the band. How did you guys start out and what have you achieved?

We consist of the following:
Joe McKee - b. London 84. guitar, vocals, theramin, trumpet, effects, keys;
Andy Citawarman- b. Indonesia 84. guitar, vox, keys, violin, effects;
Olga Hermanniusson - b. iceland 83. bass, vox, sax;
Ross DiBlasio - b. Guatamala 1985. Drums and persussion...
We met through various schools...Andy and I (Joe) met when we were about fourteen and started making noise. we fucked about for a few years and then found some strangers and started playing shows.

Q. What bands have had the greatest influence on you and who are your favourite bands at the moment?

Einsturzende Neubauten, Fushitsusha, Boredoms, ooioo, Dirty three, Billy Holiday, Sun Ra and ourselves.

Q. What helps in writing new songs? Do you need solitude to get inspiration?

All sorts of things...sometimes we will be inspired by visual things such as art or film etc...sometimes just strange experiences or our warped imagination...solitude is necassary at the beginning of the songwriting process but then our collective imagination kicks in.

Q. What is your favourite live music venue? Do you prefer small pub shows with a small audience or bigger shows with lots of people cheering you on?

Depends what mood i am in. Both have there perks. i wouldn't really trade one for the other. Small shows can be chaotic and rather shambolic and thats always fun. big shows need to be a bit more slick i suppose...but the rider is always better.

Q. Is the Perth music community a tight knit bunch?

Uuuur...not particularly. Its a small city so a lot of bitching and jealousy occurs...but we have some splendid friends amongst the industry as do other bands...it is tight knit in the sense that everybody knows eachother.

Q. What is your song writing process? Do you write the lyrics and music together or one first and then the other?

It varies from song to song...It depends what comes to yer head first...there are no rules or guidelines for how to write a song...it just happens...then once a song is written one often forgets how it was achieved....

Q. What is your take on the Perth Music Scene at the moment? Do you think it is thriving or is it a bit of over-hype?

From a commercial point of view it is thriving...fromamusical point of view it is probably over hyped a little or maybe the focus is on the wrong bands perhaps? just like any other city we have shite bands and goodones..it is up to the audiences and consumers how successful a band becomes...unfortunately the consumer is rather dumb these days.

Q. What plans do you have for the next few months?

Finishing our debut album...touring nationally a couple of times...sort out the business end of things and continue writing new songs

Morgan Interview

Perth's singer/songwriter/musician Morgan is an up and coming star playing weekly shows in and around Perth. Her acoustic EP, Fury of Colour, is available for $12.50 from her shows, Leading Edge Music Joondalup and from her website - www.missimojo.com. She gave us this exclusive interview.

Q. Tell us a little bit of history about yourself as a singer/songwriter. How did you start out and what have you achieved?

I guess I started out on the stage with dancing and singing when I was about 5. I started playing guitar at 12 and continued that through school on and off for a few years. But I started writing songs at 14 and I think that's when I decided that music was what I wanted to do.

As for what I've achieved... Probably the most memorable was in 2002 when I was in a competition on 92.9 "Search For A Rumba Star" where thepublic voted for their favorite original artist. I've played on the bill with Jimmy Barnes, Daryl Braithewaite, Vanessa Amorosi, Russel Morris, Brian Cadd and overseas in the London with UK band The Teasers.

Q. What bands have had the greatest influence on you and who are your favourite bands at the moment?

Right now Im listening to a lot of U2 and Jonny Cash, and (always) Donavon Frankenreiter. My favourtie band ever is The Doors - and I actually got to see them last year at the Moonlight & Wine Festival with Ian Astbury on vocals which was amazing! My favourite "living" band, as I call them, is Unwritten Law. So there's a huge range that I'm always listening to.

Q. What helps in writing new songs? Do you need solitude to get inspiration?

What helps? For me, the idea has to build up for a while, either that I want to write a new song, or that a song is waiting to get out... Solitude definetely helps but sometimes it's hard to find!

Q. Favourite AFL team?

As much as I would love to say The Dockers - because I always love an underdog... I just cant... Gotta go with the Eagles.

Q. What is your favourite live music venue? Do you prefer small pub shows with a small audience or bigger shows with lots of people cheering you on?

For me - The best place I played was The Acoustic Lounge in London. The reason being that the people were packed in and could hardly move, and they weren't there to see me - But nobody spoke a word and the listened to everything I sang - and enjoyed it! That was cool! As for in Perth, I don't have a favourite venue, and I like the two sides of the coin - small and intimate shows and bigger shows too. But I will say that i would prefer a small audience who is actually listeing, to a large audience that couldn't care less.

Q. What is your song writing process? Do you write the lyrics and music together or one first and then the other?

Usually I will start with the music... String a few chords together and that will inspire the words. For the most part, the idea will already be there and so when I get the chance to sit down it will come pretty quickly. Personally I can't write melodies first - they turn out really corny!

Q. What is your take on the Perth Music Scene at the moment? Do you think it is thriving or is it a bit of over-hype?

I think the Perth Music scene is going great! I don't get to see a lot of bands live as I play a few a week myself... But I try and get to at least one every few months - and everthing I see is great! I think we need more attention over here because we've got some talented musicians!

Q. What plans do you have for the next few months?

Back in the studio to record the single for radio, probably a few shows down south... And other than that, just promotion and planning a cd launch for later in the year :)

Dan Bull Interview

With a new EP on the way and a some Eskimo Joe experience under his belt, Perth's Dan Bull gave us an exclusive interview.

Q. Tell us a little bit of history about yourself as a singer/songwriter. How did you start out and what have you achieved?

I've played music most of my life (piano and frech horn) but started my 1st band in the late 90s. I had pretty much no idea what I was doing, but when I was younger I'd borrow Dad's guitar when he was out and strum away and try to write songs. I wanted to play them in pubs and so that's what I eventually started to do. I joined The Sleepy Jackson for a while and played keys with them, while still writing and performing my own stuff - then joined Eskimo Joe and played keys with them for the last 2 years and a bit - and still did my own stuff then too, but decided to take the solo route instead of doing it with a full band.

I released my 1st EP in May 2005 while Eskimo Joe was taking a break from touring. I was suprised at how well it sold (thanks all) - my family is just not that big to buy that many, and I got some great support from a lot of radio stations around Australia.

Q. What bands have had the greatest influence on you and who are your favourite bands at the moment?

Hhmm... Well going back to the early legends of pop the Beatles and the Beach Boys have probably been my ultimate influences. I have to admit working so closely with Eskimo Joe I would say they have had a big influence on my approach to writing and recording. Other influences would be Doves, NERD and Elton John too I think. Saying that though I probably could list another 100. I would like David Bowie to be an influence one day.

My fave bands at the moment - well the ones I am listening too the most are Belle and Sebastian's new album, Kanye West, and I have been lucky enough to hear some of the new Eskimo Stuff which I really enjoyed.

Q. What helps in writing new songs? Do you need solitude to get inspiration?

The best inspiration for me to write something new is hearing really good music. Something new (or old) that I havn't heard before will always inspire me because I usually wish I had written it. Solitude is not really an important inspirational factor, although once I get down to the initial trying out ideas and writing I do find it easier when I am alone.

Q. Favourite AFL team?

Really? Hawthorne - but we don't talk about that too much at the moment.

Q. What is your favourite live music venue? Do you prefer small pub shows with a small audience or bigger shows with lots of people cheering you on?

To watch or play?

To watch I love Amplifier. Saying that though Norfolk Basement is really cool too. I played there recently too and loved the room.

I think all performers love a full room. To some degree it doesn't matter the size of the room when it is packed. It's really flattering when a bunch of folks have decided to spend their night watching one of your gigs.

Q. How was it touring with Eskimo Joe? Is the Perth music community a tight knit bunch?

Touring with the Eskies was probably the most awesome 2 years of my life. I got the opportunity to see so much of Australia, meet so many people and "work" with 4 of my best buddies. I learnt heaps about music, from the industry, to touring, to writing and recording, and the standard you need to meet from both a performance and a song writing and recording perspective.

Ya I think the Perth scene is tight. We are a perocial bunch, that's for sure. Very proud of our scene. I think we are always happy when there are new dudes and dudettes in the scene too.

Q. What is your song writing process? Do you write the lyrics and music together or one first and then the other?

Usually I am a music 1st lyrics 2nd writer. However if I come up with what I think is a really cool lyric hook I'll use that as the inspiration for the rest of the song - and I guess it works vice versa too. There is no real set rule I follow when I think about it.

Q. What is your take on the Perth Music Scene at the moment? Do you think it is thriving or is it a bit of over-hype?

There is hype I guess, but not unjustified that's for sure. Perth musos are writing and producing really good music - and to me it seems like people are evolving musically which has the potential to continue to strengthen the quality of the material coming out of the West.

I think that the chances are that the scene will continue to thrive to some degree because of two main factors: 1, the way people aren't thretened by others. While there is a healthy competativeness, in the end everyone wants to help everyone be successful. That's really cool. 2, the standard of songs and performance in Perth is high, and seems to be consistently so.
People tend to hold such pride in their music and shows. Not quite awesome doesn't seem to be good enough. These 2 factors can only continue to strengthen the scene. All we need to do is to continue to remember we are only as good as our last show or our last single - and continue to make it our best.

Q. What plans do you have for the next few months?

Well, I have just finished recording a new EP. The aim is for that to be released in late May - and launch it in June. Gigging and touring is the other plan. I have decided to take time off from the Eskimo boys to focus on my solo stuff and so that's what I am doing. I can't wait!

Perth Diva ChE’nelle signs to Virgin US

Formerly dubbed “The Perth Diva” by West Coast hip-hop deejay’s, Che’nelle is an Australian Singer/Songwriter/Producer who has recently signed to Virgin Records America.

Found at the ripe age of three singing in her dad’s karaoke lounge, she knew then picking up the microphone was what she was born to do. Now all of twenty-two years, Che’nelle is setting the example to be the first “Australian Urban Diva” with silky-surprising vocals that can rival Mariah Carey and even Beyonce. Creating an infectious r’n’b sound, she is also very diverse in the different rhythms of soul, reggae and dance, delivering a unique form of “NuUrban”

Lending her voice to mixtapes by DJ Ryan and Nick Toth, Che’nelle has also worked internationally with Messiahbolical’s Throwaway Rhymes (UK), and American acts including The BumSquad Djz, Dawn Robinson, Eric Benet and Cocoa Chanelle. Youth Group Touring

2005 was a very memorable year for Youth Group. They signed to the prestigious Epitaph roster, toured Nth America with Death Cab For Cutie, joined The Music for shows in the UK and also performed at Reading & Leeds Festivals.

You may have heard their latest single, 'Forever Young' which was part of the hit TV show ‘The O.C’ and was featured on the Channel 10 promo campaign. It is one of the most played tracks across commercial radio - Australia wide, with the video also being highly rotated across Channel V, Video Hits & MTV. Last week the single debuted at #2 on the ARIA singles chart and again firmly holds it’s position this week, a monster result for this Sydney quartet.

The year ahead is already gearing up to be another hectic one. Youth Group are set to support Coldplay on their sold out Australian tour in June/July. They also recently wrapped up a national Big Day Out tour and then headed back to the US where they are currently playing more shows including the prestigious Coachella & Noisepop festivals. In addition to their touring schedule they will also complete their much anticipated third album in LA with Wayne Connolly which will be released July 8.

Some things about UK band Starsailor: they look like a mix between Kings of Leon and Killing Heidi; lead singer James Walsh sounds like a mix between Chris Cornell and Robbie Williams; all three of their albums have spawned chart songs internationally; their live performances have been raved about; all else I really know about Starsailor is that they had that Four to the Floor song which sounded way more awesome as a techno remix.

Upon listening to their third album release, On the Outside, I realised that I may enjoy all eleven tracks a bit more if they, too, went through the techno remix rigmarole. This is a collection of very radio-friendly songs. However, I mean radio-friendly in a sense that sees songs turned into airwave fillers; generic rock tunes indecipherable of artist or release period. This is the sort of music that you don’t really think about, you just listen to. Though, in some remarkable way, I still find myself humming the tune of In the Crossfire, the first released track of the album. It’s pretty subliminal stuff. In fact, it wasn’t until the third listen that I noticed one of the lyrics somewhere on the album contained the phrase “corporate glory.”

It makes me wonder how many other songs I don’t really listen to are infiltrating my brain waves through commercial radio airwaves. This album isn’t as bad – or diabolically evil – as I am making it out to be. I just got a little bored, is all. It’s okay stuff – I just prefer that techno song.

You Am I News

Seven albums into the rock and roll career of the much loved You Am I, and EMI is incredibly excited to confirm the band have signed a deal that will see the new album from this great Australian rock band released in May on the Virgin label.

Titled ‘Convicts’, the album was recorded in sixteen days over a three month period in five studios. Produced by Greg Wales in Sydney during 2005, it is described by Rusty as “a little bit punk, a little bit psychedelic with a beating heart of pure energy”.

Andy Kent said, “Feels good brothers and sisters.”
Tim Rogers said, “I’m calling it a comeback. We’re back fools!.....or mmm, We’re back, we’re fools”.

John O’Donnell, Managing Director of EMI Music Australia said, “You Am I are one of the best Australian bands of all-time. Their body of work has left an indelible stamp on this country over the last decade and more – and they have influenced just about every artist of substance to have emerged since they started. But as Johnny Thunders once said ‘you can’t put your arms around a memory’ and we only signed You Am I because when we heard ‘Convicts’ we immediately knew it was amongst their best work ever. We’re humbled and proud to be working with You Am I.”

Tim Rogers (guitar, voice), Andy Kent (bass), Russell ‘Rusty’ Hopkinson (drums) and David Lane (guitar), have been awarded seven ARIAs, while three of their albums — 1995’s Hi Fi Way, 1996’s Hourly, Daily and 1998’s #4 Record — all debuted at #1 on the ARIA chart, and the band have toured internationally to great acclaim. Oasis’ Liam Gallagher was heard to comment that they were “so fookin’ good, I want to put ‘em on me mantlepiece”.

‘Convicts’ will be released on May 13, with the single ‘It Aint Funny How We Don’t Talk Anymore’ released digitally on April 8.

Bob Evans News

Perth boy Bob Evans cruised back in to the country, (that is Australia), having finished his overseas jaunt and to prepare for the release of his new album. During his 6 months abroad Bob made two successful trips to London playing shows at the Waterrats Theatre aswell as Bar Academy. He also did a couple of shows in Sweden supporting Melbournites Architecture in Helsinki and played a New York show on his way home at Arlenes Grocery.

Now that Bob is back in town work will commence on finishing up the album artwork and shooting a clip for the first single. The album is slated for a June release. The first single will be going to radio in the very near future. Keep an eye out for a heap of tour dates on his offical site www.bobevans.com.au. The Vines new album - Vision Valley

‘Vision Valley’, the blistering, stripped-down third album from The Vines, will be released on April 1. Produced by Wayne Connolly (You Am I), ‘Vision Valley’ takes honours as the album most likely to never see the light of day. But this blast of pure rock and roll is very real, and accompanied by a truly remarkable history.

Let’s go back to 2002. The Vines debut album ‘Highly Evolved’ had been released and struck a massive chord all over the world. The Vines were on fire, gracing magazine cover after cover, earning plaudit after plaudit, playing blistering shows and selling massive amounts of records. They were everywhere. However, within a year, the toll of relentless touring and exposure was creating a new set of headlines. The Vines singer & songwriter Craig Nicholls was having immense difficulties, his behaviour becoming more and more erratic.

By the time 2004’s ‘Winning Days’ was released Nicholls had begun to spiral out of control, coming to a head when he was charged with assault after an onstage incident at Sydney’s Annandale Hotel, and resulting in the departure of bassist Patrick Matthews.

Nicholls was soon after diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, a neurobiological disorder and form of autism. People with the condition are generally considered exceptionally intelligent, and often obsessively focus their attention on music or art, but have difficulty reading social situations and coping with change. This, everyone assumed, marked the end of the Vines.

But drummer Hamish Rosser and guitarist Ryan Griffiths stuck by Nicholls through this most difficult period as he’d worked up some new songs. And it was time for The Vines to rise from the ashes.

With producer Wayne Connolly in tow, the trio recorded sessions at a variety of locations in Sydney and came away with an album that has seen The Vines come full circle. Starting over, they simply have nothing to lose. There are no splashy production values, famous studios or endless overdubs here. But there are 13 tremendous new songs that veer from gorgeous summer pop to blistering garage stomp to scattergun punk to epic psychedelia.

The first single ‘Don’t Listen to the Radio’ is an anthemic slab of garage pop, cheery handclaps belying a mountain of guitar crunch and sweetly shredded vocals. Along with ‘Gross Out’, ‘Don’t Listen to the Radio’ is available to purchase as a digital download from March 18 prior to the single’s instore date of April 8. Opening one-two punch ‘Anysound’ and ‘Nothins Comin’ originally intended as demos but stubbornly kept to kick things off, are riff-tastic hard rockers with effortlessly fluid harmonies and beyond-sticky hooks.

Title track ‘Vision Valley’ is one of Nicholls’ trademark skyward bits of grand psychedelia, a trait shared with epic six-minute Floydian closer ‘Spaceship’. All of which makes it hard to believe that this is the same songwriter behind the high-velocity punk assaults of ‘Gross Out’ and ‘Fuk Yeh’.

With Nicholls unable to tour or do much in the way of album promotion, this is music that thankfully speaks for itself. To tap into its power all you have to do is listen.

You will have to be quick to get your hands on the hottest tickets in town right now as Pete Murray’s all-ages “Opportunity Tour” is selling fast! After selling out his first Sydney show at the Enmore Theatre, Pete has just announced a second concert at the same venue on Saturday 29th April. All shows except Sydney are confirmed to also feature US troubadour Donovan Frankenreiter.

“The Opportunity Tour” is set to be the biggest roots music show outside a festival this year with Canadian band Nine Mile now also announced to open all shows except Canberra. The trio are no strangers to these shores having previously toured the East Coast with Xavier Rudd and The Beautiful Girls. Californian songstress Tristan Prettyman will come aboard as special guest for one night only in Canberra on April 12th.

Last year’s Australian tour saw Pete launching his new album See The Sun with unusually intimate club shows right around the country. The forthcoming tour will visit larger venues in all capital cities including appearances at the East Coast and West Coast Blues and Roots Festivals.

Pete will be joined on the ‘The Opportunity Tour’ by his road-hardened band The Stonemasons, who will be augmented by a full horn section for the first time on this tour making these shows a definite ‘must see’!

The tour coincides with a new four song CD called Opportunity EP which has just been confirmed for release on March 11th. The sublime acoustic driven title track is lifted from Pete’s acclaimed See The Sun album which has already been certified triple platinum for sales of over 210,000 copies. The Opportunity EP also features three songs which have never been released before … “Empty”, “Unfinished” and “Sinner”. Pete mainly recorded these new tunes over recent months not far from his home in Byron Bay. Presidents of USA Tour Cancelled

The Presidents of the United States of America’s Australian tour in March has been cancelled due to the promoter’s financial difficulties. The band expresses sincere regret for the inconvenience caused to their fans and looks forward to returning later in 2006 to support their new album "Love Everybody".

“We took a chance with a new promoter who turned out not to have the resources to put on the tour. We are really sorry, we love Australia, and we WILL be back in the Fall. We appreciate the massive fan support and renewed interest in the band. We WILL be back to Australia in the Fall.”

Tickets will be honored for the new tour dates coming in September/ October or refunds for fans are available from the place of purchase, though we encourage fans to hold onto the tickets.

End Of Fashion News

Following their explosive performances on the national Big Day Out festival recently, Perth band End Of Fashion release ‘She’s Love’, the third single from their Gold self-titled album.

‘She’s Love’ was written by lead singer Justin Burford, and will be released on Saturday February 25. It features a Alan Moulder remix of ‘Anything Goes’ and a live acoustic version of ‘Lock Up Your Daughters’.

Jamie has always had a strong affinity with music. And whilst he may be classed as a jazz artist, his range is in fact far more extensive, embracing everything from pop, rock, dance and funk to more classical styles. “Jazz is the greatest platform to do whatever you want. People ask why I play jazz. It’s because you can take it to so many different places.”

Jamie’s latest collection of tunes Catching Tales (out now through Universal Music) has attracted widespread critical acclaim. The album features trademark takes on old favourites, along with some of Jamie’s own works.

Katy Steele and Simon Leach of Little Birdy have been nominated in the Best Female Singer and Best Guitarist categories respectively for the 2006 WAMI Awards to be presented at the WAMI Festival opening party on Saturday February 18 at the Fly By Night Club in Fremantle. Also nominated is Little Birdy's Sound Engineer Gavin Tempany in the Best Live Sound Engineer. Little Birdy have been nominated in the Best Commercial Pop Act Category and this award along with many others will be awarded at the 2006 WAMI Awards at the Becks Verandah on Tuesday February 21. Most of the charm of The Arctic Monkeys can be found in their Sheffield accents. Much like what The Streets do to me, The Arctic Monkeys only hold my interest because I think dowdy English accents are cute. Lead singer Alex Turner’s husky yet innocent vocals add a layer of appeal to what would otherwise be just another noughties garage rock band. I never paid much attention to this band, but I do remember that I’ve been hearing about them for a little while now so to find out that this is their debut album raised an eyebrow.

Apparently they’ve been huge on the internet. While my disdain for MySpace doesn’t entirely clot my good judgments of a band, I still remain wary of acts whose high popularity hasn’t been aided by a good live act. Call me old fashioned. Rather, call me a hypocrite. I haven’t seen The Arctic Monkeys live. But I have listened to Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not enough times to see why they have such a huge following.

This stuff is cute and catchy. I’m particularly fond of Riot Van which unfortunately, like most addictive little songs, is barely two minutes long. This is a nice little CD to add to your collection if you’re into head-bopping and body-swaying. Oh, and if you giggle when you hear someone saying “focking.”

NOVA 93.7fm (Perth) has picked up their new song 'Goodnight & Goodluck' and are playing it as a WA Made track at the moment. Jake's been back from his international travels for a year now, and this is the first song he's written about his experiences that he has brought to the band. Snoop Dogg Set To Tour

After months of growing speculation, Dainty Consolidated Entertainment is thrilled to announce the upcoming Australian tour of hip-hop kingpin SNOOP DOGG, with pre-sold tickets via the Internet available February 21 and general tickets available February 23.

Having not stepped a foot (or paw, as the case may be) in the country for over eight years, rap’s self-appointed grand pimp Snoop Dogg is ready to return to our shores and wow hip-hop fans in all major cities with his signature West Coast flavour. As an added bonus, he’s also making sure his 12-piece live band – the Snoopadelics – make the journey with him.

Born Calvin Broadus in California’s Long Beach City, Snoop has grown from a teenage member of the notorious Crip gang to a 90’s rap superstar to a global entertainment icon – and he’s still only in his early thirties. Due to his gang allegiance and ties with California hip-hop legend Dr. Dre, his 1993 album Doggystyle was the first debut album ever to enter the Billboard charts at number one. Singles such as “What’s My Name?” “Gin & Juice” and “Ain’t No Fun (If The Homies Can’t Have None)” came to define West Coast hip-hop in that era. 'Kelly' is the hands in the air lovesick anthem off the Van She EP, and the band have just made a cracking clip for it that is set to take over your TV next week. The clip was directed by Nicolas Randall and Scott Otto from Family, and features the band playing live in a television studio, Top Of The Pops style, while a collection of real life Kellys watch on the television, seemingly compelled by the band performance to spontaneously start making out with their BF.

The time has come for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to return, and won’t you know about it. Show Your Bones is the name of the album, and it’s a more diverse, more developed, and very possibly more amazing suite of songs than the gobsmacking Fever To Tell. 'Gold Lion' is the lead track from the record, and will be on your radio next Monday. At once recognisable but also a recognisable shift from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs sound we know, 'Gold Lion' sees Karen O singing with more clarity and confidence than ever before over acoustic guitar strums, keys and Nick Zinners distinctive electric guitar business.

WOLFMOTHER
After their enormous, spellbinding Big Day Out shows, it’s time for Wolfmother to leave us and head overseas, to command and to conquer. Beth Orton New Album

The new Beth Orton album, ‘Comfort of Strangers’, will be in stores on Saturday 18th February 2006 and April will see the return of Beth to Australian shores for a National Tour. ‘Comfort Of Strangers’ will be released as a special limited edition double CD featuring 4 exclusive non-album tracks and an alternative recording of the album's title track.

Recorded over a two week period in New York in the spring of 2005 with producer/collaborator Jim O'Rourke, ‘Comfort Of Strangers’ is possibly Beth's most intimate and personal work to date, and features 14 songs which are at times sad, funny, playful and poignant, romantic, always lyrical and on occasion even a touch sentimental. Orton composed all the songs, although the title track was written in partnership with O’Rourke and singer-songwriter M. Ward.

April 2006 will see the Australian return of the artist Details Magazine lovingly dubbed “the bummed out angel in the badlands of love”. Introducing the Arctic Monkeys

February 11 sees the release of Arctic Monkey’s first single “I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor” from their debut album “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not”. This four-piece from Sheffield are exploding in the UK in a way that no band has since Oasis back in the early 90s!

The Arctic Monkeys' tale couldn't be more conventional. Vocalist, Alex Turner, and guitarist, Jamie Cook, friends since they were children, formed the band with drummer Matt Helders and bassist Andy Nicholson in 2001 while still at school, having seen Sheffield friends do the same. But it was their decision to hand out free copies of their demos at gigs that started the chain reaction that has shot them to success in the UK. Impressed recipients swapped tracks on the internet, before the record industry even knew the Arctic Monkeys were alive. By May 2005, they had signed to Domino, home of Franz Ferdinand. By October, their first London headlining show had sold out the 1200 capacity Astoria, shortly before "I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor", stormed straight to No 1, taking the industry completely by surprise. It's a remarkable achievement for the band, whose only other release to date in the UK was a limited edition EP last year called 'Five Minutes With The Arctic Monkeys'.

Don’t be surprised too, if you think you’ve heard the rest of the album tracks already. These tunes are already life-affirming anthems to a generation of kids who’ve been creating scenes of intense fandom more deranged than most bands will ever witness. They're songs for everyone - from the shy romantic whose hopeless with the opposite sex, to the guy who'd still take you home, even though he "can't see through your fake tan" ('Still Take You Home').

Then you get the tongue-tied tart in 'Dancing Shoes', the bored band-watcher in 'Fake Tales Of San Francisco' and the guy whose girl's got the hump in 'Mardy Bum'. The knock-out punch is saved for the finale, though. And when it comes, it smacks you three times, just to make sure. 'When The Sun Goes Down' is the sound of the streets, long after the pub has kicked ya out for the night, 'From The Ritz To The Rubble' is a three-minute blast that dares to take on that most grotesque of creatures (nightclub bouncers!).

They might have been swamped in all the hype, but all of that's not the point. The point's that there ain't no disappointment around here. Enjoy!

State Of Emergency Review

In preparation for my first listening of The Living End's latest album offering State of Emergency, I went back and listened to their 2000 release Roll On. Though mainly to remind myself of what I was getting myself into, I had also assumed that I would have to be comparing this past record to some sort of "newer" and "matured" sound that many bands seem to acquire after three albums and over ten years in the industry. What I found, however, was that The Living End still sound like, well, The Living End.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing, of course; the band's ever-growing fan base reflects that they must be onto a good thing. I just happen to belong to that generational demographic which has followed the band's career right from the beginning and after four albums of pretty much the same thing, it just becomes a bit tedious. Also, according to some interview I read, a majority of the band's new following consists of tweenagers who have only recently gotten into their blend of Australian punk rawk, which perhaps justifies (or at lest explains) their never-changing sound.

So when it comes to pleasing the new-found masses after a ten-year reign, which proves more music cred: Keeping constant with your sound like The Living End, or releasing a Best Of album like Spiderbait? Or none of the above? Either way, I think The Living End did release a singles album somewhere a long the way so what the hell am I on about?

Tangents aside, I can't say this is a bad album because it isn't. What it is, is a Living End album, and if you like that sort of thing then you'll think it's great. If you're like me, you'll get b-o-r-e-d. Granted, I quite liked the track Nothing Lasts Forever, and I could probably get used to the title track once it's had the shit played out of it on the radio. Oh, and I will probably still go and catch some of their set at the Big Day Out in case they play some of those old-time tunes from the nineties that I'm so fond of.

Alex Lloyd's Song of Hope

ARIA Award winning singer/songwriter Alex Lloyd has recorded a song dedicated to Lauren Huxley, the 19 year old Sydney girl who was attacked in her home last year.

Alex recorded the song after reading of Lauren’s struggle to recover from the injuries sustained in the heinous attack.

“The story just moved me so much. It was the day before Christmas, I had my guitar in hand and the Song of Hope just flowed out of me. It was quite a strange feeling but afterwards I felt compelled to send it to the Huxley family. I guess it was a gesture of good will and good wishes after feeling so inspired from reading about the family’s incredible strength and solidarity. If a song can move and encourage people to help one another then I'm all for it” said Lloyd.

The track is available for streaming on www.alexlloyd.com. The Huxley family told Sydney’s Daily Telegraph that “When we played the song for Lauren she had this big smile – this huge big smile on her face. It was incredible”.
